Practical Exam

You will be required to identify issues with a movement you are shown and explain how to make corrections using our System for Coaching with Technical Cues, as well as demonstrate your knowledge of the 4/4 Technique Grading System.

Prerequisites

5thSet Coaching Manual: Methodology for Training and Competition is required reading prior to taking the course. Available for purchase here.

The 5thSet Coaching Manual is Your Textbook

  • 5thSet MSM Sequence System

Mechanically Similar Movements are a fundamental aspect of the 5thSet methodology. Templates using the MSM Sequence System and further instructions are included.

  • The Business of Coaching

This includes selecting clients, the onboarding process, planning for a meet, selecting an appropriate template, client check-ins, technique review: the 4/4 Movement Grading System, and offering correction.

  • Theory for Coaching with Technical Cues

Screaming random, confusing words or phrases at someone while they attempt a max lift will usually do more harm than good. Most of us have had a taste of that and figured out the obvious for ourselves, quickly. There is a better way.

  • 5thSet Protocols

When someone asks you why you chose to use a certain training means or protocol or exercise, you should be able to present a thoughtful train of logic which carried you to that decision. Included are the 75% and 80% 5thSet Protocols, 70% and 75% Technique Protocols, Deload Protocol, and various protocols for 2nd Pressing Day.

  • Mitigating Risk Factors for Injury

It's impossible to prevent injuries altogether. The best we can hope for is to mitigate the issues which we know can be risk factors. An extensive list of factors is included, from overuse to inadequate hydration.

  • Obstacles to Training

Barriers to training are divided into three categories: Psychological/Emotional, Physical, and Environmental.

  • Graphic Concepts

There are a few visual concepts essential to understanding 5thSet, including fatigue accumulation throughout the course of a macrocycle, normal distribution of talent among lifters, and Prilepin’s chart. These will be explained in detail in the Certification Course.

  • Use of Equipment in Training and Competition

This includes prescribing appropriate footwear, instructing in the appropriate selection and use of lifting belts, knee and wrist wraps, and knee sleeves.

  • Additional Topics

Include but are not limited to: macrocycle overview, setting training maxes, meet day attempt selection, setting a training schedule, Long Delayed Training Effect (LDTE), training means and training potential, the Law of Accommodation, the assistance work theorem, and weight class transitions.
